Comic-Con Preview: Skyline

July 23rd, 2010 by Matthew Fong

Skyline looks amazing! We got to see the first ever look of the trailer for the film. They only finished filming 9 weeks ago and the visual effects were started 3 weeks ago but they wanted to make sure they had something to show us at Comic-Con. This is a completely independent film that had no studio help and was literally shot in one of the director’s houses. The idea started around the time that Paranormal Activity was released and the Strause brothers (who direct the film) and their two creative partners discussed how hard it was to make a film these days so they decided if the guy who did Paranormal Activity could do it, so could they!

In less than 11 months, they were done. They had a crew of only about 120 people and only 5 people on set made decisions. If you know about film making, especially for big budget films, that is a huge difference an the cast and crew thought it was great. They tried to remove the horrific inefficiencies of film making and it looks like they succeeded. The trailer that they showed was massive and looked really entertaining. There’s over 800 shots in this film so don’t be fooled by it being an independent film, it sure doesn’t look like it had a small budget.

Basically, this is an alien invasion on a global scale. You know how everybody looks at a car accident when they drive by? Well that’s the weakness the aliens in this movie use against humankind. Don’t look up or you’ll be sucked into one of their ships! They don’t use bullets or lasers, they just prey on all the humans while they’re distracted by the spectacle.

Donald Faison, one of the stars of the movie said that it was difficult to shoot and and of the world movie but be quiet to not wake the neighbors. Again, they literally shot most of the film in Greg Strause’ house. Luckily the unit below him was under construction, so that was a lifesaver. It’s going to be interested to see what a group or regular people do to stay alive and not get abducted by aliens. Skyline comes out November 12th of this year so look out for it!
