A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas is the best 3D stoner Christmas movie ever! Kal Penn and John Cho return with almost everybody else you can remember in this third installment of the Harold and Kumar series. It starts off right away with a Christmas carol and gets right into the vulgar comedy you expect from this R-rated franchise. Even before the opening title hits the screen, they’re already puffing 3D smoke into the laughing audience’s faces thanks to some “Winter Wonderweed”. It’s great. I didn’t like the 2nd movie but this one may be even better than the original.
The movie doesn’t shy away from how ridiculous it is. It shamelessly pushes 3D TVs and gimmicky exploits while pleasing Harold & Kumar fans with an actual storyline. While the movie slows down at some points, it quickly amps right back up to epic laughs and increasingly ludicrous scenes. It keeps the same formula from the past two films with a few montages and cut scenes in different film formats. They had some Sin City-style and claymation sh*t going on. The script is actually pretty smart as it hints at some played-out holiday scenarios and then takes you on a totally different tangent. But as Guantanamo Bay went overboard in my opinion, this one matured into a well conceived comedy.

It’s been a while since the boys lived together and hung out. Kumar is a hopped up mess indulging in his usual “not low” activities while Harold is trying to move forward with his adult life. It’s not until a mysterious package makes their paths cross into an overnight mission to find the perfect Christmas tree. Once again, Harold and Kumar find themselves in crazy plot twist after crazy coincidence after crazy scenario. You can expect off-color racist jokes, a hilariously hip and cute baby, new and old friends to pop out of nowhere, drug-induced trips and a whole lot more. There are boobs, there are dicks, there are explosions, there are drugs. There’s even a Waffle Bot because Waffles + Robots = Awesome. I hope wafflebots are part of Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas’ marketing campaign because I want to buy one right now.

Wafflebot! Waffles + Robots = Awesome.
Neil Patrick Harris absolutely kills it once again while reminding us about all his other great roles on TV, in movies and his own personal life. His segment is probably my favorite to space out on. There are so many other great actors in this installment too including Danny Trejo, Thomas Lennon, Elias Koteas, Patton Oswalt, Richard Riehle and Bobby Lee. They all have little roles that add so much to the film…Harold & Kumar is always about the great characters they introduce. Amir Blumenfeld was a great choice to join the stoner duo for this one…his face will make every pothead smile. Both Paula Garcés and Danneel Ackles reprise their roles as Maria and Vanessa, Harold and Kumar’s love interests. They don’t have major roles but do offer up some festive eye candy. Even Harold and Kumar’s old Jewish neighbors, Goldstein (David Krumholtz) and Rosenberg (Eddie Kaye Thomas), are back.

The 3D effects aren’t going to make your eyes pop out but they’re as good as any other movie you’ve seen. There are things flying at you and characters pointing at you – it all just adds to the effect of seeing this movie loaded. The added film effects are cool but sometimes make the movie feel like a made-for-tv movie. But this kind of is a made-for-tv movie…made for you to watch on your tv while you’re sitting on your cough getting high. If you’re a fan of the series, you will not be disappointed. If you actually want a real, funny movie…you won’t be disappointed either. I had my doubts, but the team behind Harold & Kumar (writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg) brought it back together and gave the project to an actual director again (Todd Strauss-Schulson) who did an amazing job keeping the stoner story going and not crash. I honestly can’t wait to watch it again. Bring friends, it’s a very social movie. Merry Christmas, and we’ll see ya for the 4th one.

NPH's number is the best. He should be on broadway...oh wait.
Sadly, there isn’t anything at the end of the credits so run out the theater in glee when this one ends.
