REVIEW: Green Lantern

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Green LanternWith the ring comes great honor and great responsibility. I’m not responsible if you go see this movie. The theater is flooded with comic book adaptations this summer and Green Lantern is definitely at the bottom of the list. There’s not much going for this movie other than its name and even that doesn’t appeal to a large enough audience. Other than the star franchise of Batman, DC Comic movies are going from bad to worse (Catwoman, The Losers, Jonah Hex). Green Lantern just doesn’t measure up to the expectations that other comic book movies have raised the bar to.

This is the origin story of how Hal Jordan becomes Earth’s first Green Lantern after Abin Sur (Temuera Morrison), the former Green Lantern protecting our sector, crashed. You get the full background story of both Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps, a brotherhood formed by Immortals harnessing the power of will to protect the universe in peace. It’s a lot of details that most people don’t care about. The job of the writers is to mix the origin details that fans love with a story that has mass appeal to a general audience. The writers didn’t do their job. The movie went from dull to awkward to retarded and then it ended. I got extremely bored in the middle of the movie and even thought of putting on my headphones and listening to my iPod. Even though the story and characters are inspired from a breadth of source comic material, the characters in this movie were flat and the conflicts were mundane. The movie didn’t offer anything we haven’t seen before.

Green Lantern

"Don't superheroes always get the girl?"

My favorite characters in Green Lantern is usually the most hated part of comic book movies: the love interest. Blake Lively played the role of Carol Ferris to the t and looked magnificent while doing it. There are a lot of corny eye-rolling moments, but she offered up the greatest twist in the movie. Every time she came on screen I actually wanted to pay attention and watch the movie. When she left, I slouched back in my seat. I like Ryan Reynolds, but not as Green Lantern. He’s a character himself and his charisma got to shine only a little bit. He took the role of Green Lantern way too seriously and didn’t have fun with it. The result was a superhero who wasn’t super at all…just another guy with powers. The main focus of the movie was Green will versus Yellow fear and our yellow belly villain was Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard) who had a mix of over the top and pitch perfect scenes.
Green Lantern

Well this doesn't look silly at all

The imagery of the visual effects were amazing. The creative imaginations behind this movie really made some interesting things like a never-ending/ever-changing sphere from Tomar-Re (voiced by Geoffrey Rush)’s ring, Hal and Kilowog (voice by Michael Clarke Duncan)’s Ringslinging 101 class and a soul sucking monster blob named Parallax (voiced by Clancy Brown). Most of the time, the blob looked terrible but in one instance (in an airplane hangar) you could see the limbs of people reaching out of the yellowy mass…that blew my mind. Other than that, the 3D was poor as usual and the rest of the visuals were pretty regular. Most of the movie is CG to the extent that they should have just shot all the live action scenes in front of a green screen and made the entire project computer generated.
Green Lantern

Damnit! This pic makes the movie look badass!

Near the end of the movie is a scene where swarms of people are running in the streets like a disaster movie. It looked as terrible as a disaster movie but displayed one blatant lesson: you should run away from this movie. Stop thinking about it, don’t go to it…don’t even rent it. They say that you know you’re watching a great comic book movie when you forget that the story and characters are from a comic book. Well, at times, I forgot I was watching a comic book movie…just a really bad movie. Maybe Sinestro (Mark Strong) will get his own spinoff and Reynolds will go back to playing Deadpool…I’d only want to see Green Lantern in another movie if it’s about the Justice League but the way DC is going, that may never see the light.

WonderCon: Warner Bros. Green Lantern Panel

Friday, April 1st, 2011

To start things off, Warner Bros treated the San Francisco WonderCon audience to an exclusive look at the new Green Lantern film. It was about 9 minutes of footage from the beginning of the movie where Abin Sur escapes the wrath of Parallax and crash lands on Earth where he recruits Hal Jordan to become his replacement as the Green Lantern. After putting on the ring, he’s whisked away to meet the Green Lantern Corps. Imagine thousands of Green Lanterns almost all digitally made. If they do the correct mix of action, adventure, and special effects…this could work out. The last trailer didn’t look too hot but the new full trailer will play before Thor next month.

When asked how it was to shoot a majority of the movie infront of a blue screen in Louisiana, Ryan Reynolds that it felt good after seeing that shit [the footage] right there. He said he prepared for 6 months before the movie to get physically prepared. He’s not old, but he’s not 19 anymore and jumping a couple stories onto concrete hurts. When asked what the difference between all the superhero movies and this one, Reynolds answered that they’re all difference at that he grew up with Star Wars so he always wanted to get into something like this. He said he isn’t a studio loyalist but that this studio, with what they did with Harry Potter, that they’re spending the money in the right way.

Reynolds performed the Green Lantern Oath with the entire WonderCon audience, but it was a million times better at Comic Con. When asked who would win in a fight, Deadpool or Green Lantern he replied, “I’ll go with Green Lantern at this point in time.” The movie took about 6 months to shoot and “it’s the post where this movie begins.” From the footage, you can tell that Green Lantern is CG heavy with tons of special effects and alterations.

Ryan Reynolds is known for his sarcastic remarks and one-liners but for Green Lantern, Reynolds explained that the character is not funny, he has a dray wit.

Blake Lively, who plays Carol Ferris in the movie, was also in attendance and asked about her decision to dye her hair for the movie. Carol is brunette and she’s blonde but she said she did it for the fans. Her security guard, who you wouldn’t think reads comic books, was really excited when he heard she got the part. He told her that she had to dye her hair brown for her own security. Then she said something about having more material on her costume and the audience Boooed. That was pretty much the extent of her involvement in the panel.

Warner Brothers gave the best swag at WonderCon last year, this year they gave everybody in the audience a Green Lantern t-shirt and lanyard pictured below:

Comic-Con WB Panel: The Green Lantern, Harry Potter, and Sucker Punch

The Green Lantern PosterThe Green Lantern

With about 3 weeks of shooting left to go, the cast and crew of The Green Lantern came to present what they’ve been working on. In the DC Universe, this is the most anticipated movie on the slate and from the way Geoff Johns, Chief Creative Officer of DC, was talking, it sounds like the rest of the DC movies hang on the success or failure of the Green Lantern (like the possibility of a Justice League movie). Martin Campbell is the director of The Green Lantern and this is his first superhero movie. He said that the tone of the movie is real action mixed with some humor courtesy of Reynolds and Blake. It’s great fun but also a great adventure. There’s been a lot of debate of the costume which will be entirely CGI. It’s the tradition black and green but they lost the white gloves because they think its cooler and more interesting. There are 7 lines that haven’t been seen yet which evolve from the ring which are along the muscles. He said it’s still a work in progress.

Donald DeLine (producer) said that the opportunities in this movie is great because they’re able to take us to the center of the universe to Oa. We also are going to see about 3600 digitally made green lanterns including some of the favorites. Geoff said that 10 years ago an executive at a studio asked if they could do the movie without the ring (the whole crowd moaned from this comment). Then and there he thought the movie was never going to be made. It’s been misinterpreted as a comedy and a lot of people have been saying negative things but he says it’s going to be great. They didn’t show too much footage but they did show Reynolds using the ring early on (he obviously didn’t know its full power). We didn’t get to see the costume though.

Harry Potter PosterHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I

There wasn’t much of a panel for Harry Potter at this year’s Comic-Con which angered a lot of the die hard HP fans which camped out for hours. However, Tom Felton aka Draco Malfory did come out to Comic-Con for the first time ever and presented the never before seen trailer for the next film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I. If you don’t know, the last story of Harry Potter has been split up into two movies. There’s just so much going on that they felt they needed more like 4 hours instead of 2 (or they just wanted to make double the money for 3/4 the price). Part I comes out November 19, 2010 and Part II comes out next summer on July 15, 2011. Felton said that all of the cast and crew put everything into making this set of films because they knew it would be the last. There’s not much to say about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows except to expect the great quality we’ve all come to enjoy from the previous films. They knew they were making something special and hope that everyone likes it.

Sucker Punch PosterSucker Punch

This was the movie panel I wanted to see most at Comic-Con and now this might be my most anticipated movie. Zach Snyder, director of Dawn of the Dead, Watchmen, and 300, has obviously been making film adaptations. This is the first time where he’s doing something original but to him, there’s not much different. The way he explained it is that once he wrote the story, it was just like all the other films he had made…there was the source material and now it was time to make it. He described the film as an amazing journey that he wanted to torture these girls with.

This film has EVERYTHING: dragons, mech warriors, samurais, ninjas, planes, big guns…and interpretive dancing. The premise of the story is still under wraps a bit but it looks like the main character, Baby Doll, is put into an insane asylum by her abusive father. She has to escape so she teams up with these other girls to do so. Snyder said that the story came from a transition concept from tv commercials. With commercials, you have to go through this process of condensing time. In his movie, you transition from the insane asylum to this other world in stressful moments. You can put a lot into these tiny moments of emotional outburst. He also wanted to create a satisfying ending from a twist within the story.

The almost all-girl cast in this film is amazing. It includes Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Carla Gugino, Jena Malone, Abbie Cornish. All extremely beautiful and apparently deadly! Zach Snyder said that the girls did such an amazing job and if he had to cut all of the action scenes, the movie would still be good.
