REVIEW: Priest

Friday, May 13th, 2011

PriestPriest is the prequel to something that hasn’t been made yet and based on a totally different story from a graphic novel. The whole movie is just a set up and therefore pretty damn disappointing. Right as the movie was building up and getting somewhat exciting, it ended. It looked pretty but Priest was dull and missing a lot of everything. It had a couple cool action scenes but not enough to even be called an action movie. Most of the movie was riddled with really crappy dialogue trying explain what was going on as the main characters go on a journey to unravel a mystery that was pretty obvious from the beginning. I just used the word pretty 3 times already and that’s all Priest was.

In an apocalyptic setting, the Church has protected the people of the land behind walled cities while training a select few extraordinary people to become Priests. These Priests don’t give sermons every Sunday morning, they’re vampire hunters and become the new savior of humankind. Eventually, the Priests conquer the remaining vampires and the Church no longer needs their services so they are disbanded into society as regular folk. Rumors rumble about vampire attacks in the outskirts but the Monsignors don’t believe it. One of these attacks involve our main Priest’s brother, wife and daughter. Priest must disobey his vow to go protect his family and in doing so falls right into the hands of a friend turned enemy. There was potential there…right?

Why did I agree to make another one of these?

The backdrops were amazing and the visuals were top notch. I thought the 3D could have been better (this was post converted so not filmed with actual 3D equipment). The futuristic aspects of the film were really cool from the costumes to the vehicles and automated confession machines. The monsters and creatures looked really well done too and the way they split and splattered would make any horror fan rejoice. I really enjoyed all of the scenes that were set in the large dusty desert which looked like it went on for miles. But all those elements together couldn’t save this waste of film. The script was just garbage and the plot in general had little substance. I think the movie would’ve been better if it was muted or just a really long music video.

Maggie Q wears the pants in this Priesthood

I’m a huge fan of Paul Bettanny but I hate the whispery bad ass character type (a la Batman). While he is bad ass in the movie, I just wish they would’ve took Priest in a more interesting direction rather than the loner superhero angle. However, the characters that did shine through were Priestess played by the exceptional Maggie Q and Lucy Pace (Lily Collins aka The Screamer). The girls of the movie really blew away the men in terms of acting and presence. The guys were the stereotypical macho men trying to act too cool for school. Karl Urban played Black Hat who in one scene reminded me of character from Kung Fu Hustle. I would’ve loved if he played with that concept the entire film but he was bogged down by the terrible script. Cam Gigandet played Hicks, Lucy Pace’s boyfriend. He kind of becomes Priest’s apprentice throughout the journey but not in the way of Priesthood but rather just how to stay alive against vampires.

Paul Bettany as Priest saving Lily Collins as the damsel in this dress...it's a hot outfit

How would you categorize this movie? This is a horror film at heart with a lot of in your face scares that will make you jump out your seat. It’s another epic journey road trip that doesn’t take you anywhere except a possible sequel if people actually pay for this in theaters. It’s kind of sci-fi but only in the sense that it’s set in the future with innovative set designs, vehicles and weapons. Priest’s weapons are really cool…and sacrilegious to boot! But again, there’s not enough action to call this an action movie. I was really disappointed and honestly falling asleep in the beginning and middle but once the ending came together, I was awoken only to realize that this was it and I would have to wait for the possible sequel for the actual good movie. Remember, to go against the Church is to go against God. Go against this movie.

WonderCon: Priest Panel

Sunday, April 3rd, 2011

PriestSorry in advance for the discombobulation of this post, but I tried connecting a couple different events into one post.

The Priest panel began with the same awesome 2D animation prologue footage from Comic Con done by Afro Samurai artist Takashi Okazaki. Many of the questions and answers were similar to the Comic Con panel as well as the special 3D footage screening that I attended the night before – more on that later.

Priest Graphic Novel Creator Hyung Min-woo and his translators at WonderCon 2011

Since Hyung Min-woo (the Priest graphic novel creator) is from Korea and only speaks “stupid English,” he had to have a translator. But he didn’t have just one, but two translators…one to translate from English to Korean and another to translate Korean to English…it was pretty funny. He said that this movie breathes new breath into the story. The movie begins after the novel and is an imagining of what could happen in the future. Hyung actually created a new set of comics to depict the time between Book 16 and the movie.
Priest

Lily Collins on the Priest Panel at WonderCon 2011

This was a pretty big day for Lily Collins (also known as The Screamer) because she had just gotten the news that she had been cast as Snow White alongside Julia Roberts in the formerly known “The Brothers Grimm: Snow White” (now just Snow White). She remarked on how she’s entering the fairy tale world so there would be more WonderCons, Comic Cons, and more fans. She was so grateful that they pushed shooting for Snow White so she could still do Mortal Instruments. Lily said that she’s a huge fan of the Mortal Instruments books and can’t wait for the next one.

An audience member asked the panel if they read, “The Passage” and if that had any influence on the movie because they seems so similar. Paul Bettany replied that it was so funny she said that because he and Scott had read it last summer after filming the movie the summer before and he agreed, it was like they were from the same idea. Scott said he read it and thought, great, someone else is on the same track as us.

The Full Priest Panel at WonderCon 2011: Hyung Min-woo, Paul Bettany, Lily Collins, Cam Gigandet, and Scott Stewart at WonderCon 2011

So, how does Priest look? Fucking Bad Ass. I got to see a scene and sizzle reel in both 3D and 2D and even though the movie is converted to 3D post production (aka not filmed with 3D cameras), the movie does benefit from the 3D conversion. If you read earlier, they filmed the movie not a year ago, but 2 years ago…so they are painstakingly going through the movie and doing the 3D right. Director Scott Stewart explained, that this studio, Sony, doesn’t own cable channels, they’re a hardware company the makes and sells 3D equipment so they want quality 3D material to sell that equipment. Even though he’s being paid by the studio, I believe him because the 3D looked great. I mean, ask Clint Culpepper.

Set in a post apocalyptic world (the vampires and humans duked it out hurting not only themselves, but the Earth), the tone of this movie is cold, grimey, and isolated. The Priests saved humankind from the vampires but now have been disbanded into a world that doesn’t need them. Now we need them again. A lot of the scenes looked reminiscent of Kung Fu Hustle where you have interesting well framed character designs that just jump off the screen with personality. Paul Bettany is the man of this film and he’s a dark whispery action hero with a “thousand man star” kind of like young Eastwood (as described by Scott). It seems like he has short one liners like “Where is she,” “save your bullets,” and “now we can do this the eas- [gets spit in face] Oh God, I’ve always preferred the hard way.”

Paul Bettany on the Priest Panel at WonderCon 2011

The footage boasts beautiful landscapes, lots of slow motion effects, and set ups for epic poses, and startling in your face action sequences. Do you remember the Power Rangers when they’d attack a monster, then freeze in front of the frame while the aftermath of explosions happened behind them? Yeah, a lot of that. An audience member even asked if they practiced those poses and Paul Bettany answered “oh yeah.” This was the first time Paul Bettany was seeing the footage in 3D and he said he was “blown away. So fucking cool.”

Paul Bettany shared how he was grateful to work with Scott again and how Culpepper decided to give them another job before the receipts from Legion even came in. He gave them three times the budget ($65 million according to Clint’s outburst) and with a great script, knew Scott would create this cool world. It was like being able to see a great artist paint a beautiful painting with even more expensive paint.
