REVIEW: The Three Musketeers

Friday, October 21st, 2011

The Three MusketeersThe Three Musketeers is an awful movie but it’s still a lot of fun! It’s a speed demon that rushes through Alexandre Dumas’s story in a loose interpretation chocked full of over-the-top action. It’s like a mix of Pirates of the Caribbean, Sherlock Holmes and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow…but about the Three Musketeers. I know the French like their cheese, but wow, this movie is cheeeeeseey. It’s as smart as a blunt sword with plot twists that wouldn’t surprise a toddler. But I couldn’t help but like it – it’s a popcorn movie through and through and kids of all ages are going to enjoy it. Other than a few choice words from the Musketeer’s foul mouth servant and some cringe-inducing shots from the final battle, this movie is very kid-friendly (there’s not even any blood minus that final battle).

It’s incredibly fast paced which doesn’t allow for any character development or general interest in anything going on at all. The movie literally goes from this to that and then just does something else. With most kids diagnosed with A.D.D. these days, The Three Musketeers might get a warm welcome from American audiences – it already did in Germany. The movie begins with the introduction of the famed Three Musketeers – Athos (Matthew Macfadyen), Aramis (Luke Evans) and Porthos (Ray Stevenson) as well as Milady (Milla Jovovich). These Musketeers are like the King of France’s special forces…his top three secret spies (but it’s not really a secret to anyone). They’re on a mission to recover blueprints of a war machine from Da Vincni’s Vault until something goes horribly wrong.

One year later, we meet D’Artagnan (Logan Lerman) who is our protagonist traveling to Paris to become a Musketeer himself. He’s hot-headed and is pretty much Shia LaBeouf’s character from Transformers. They have to be long lost brothers separated at birth or something because they look and act the same way. Anyway, of course he meets all three Musketeers and then finds himself in a massive brawl with the cardinal’s troops on the same day. We learn that the Three Musketeers have become jaded and are warriors without a war to fight. So instead, they drink wine, wine, wine, wine, wine, wine, wine. As Cardinal Richelieu (Christoph Waltz) tries to implement a plan to put France at war which everyone seems to know except the childish idiot known as the King of France, King Louis XIII (Freddie Fox), the Musketeers are sent on a mission by the cute Queen (Juno Temple) and her lady-in-waiting Constance (Gabriella Wilde) who is also D’Artagnan’s love interest. Boom. Musketeers back in action.

If you love this period’s costumes, you’re going to love the get ups in this thing. Almost all of the women have their outfits push out their breasts until they’re in your face (remember this is 3D) and Milla Jovovich even has to fight in a few of these gowns. Her action scenes are by far the best. That Resident Evil training really allowed her to show up the guys in this movie. All the fighting is real and mostly swordplay…with real swords. You can see the sparks and hear the clashes. They used a lot of camera tricks like slow motion, panned shots and 3D gimmicks to add to the fighting but it’s still wonderfully choreographed fencing. The action doesn’t stop there though: there are explosions, guns, old-school futuristic weaponry and airships. Yes, airships. This version of The Three Musketeers is the steam-punk version of The Three Musketeers.
The Three Musketeers

Who do you think is going to win?

Not only is the action over exaggerated but the comedy is too. There’s really some sort of goofy feeling going on throughout the entire film but without them doing it on purpose. Let me try to explain: the Tailor (Ben Moor) is a great character who commits to the weirdness 100%. The King comes in close second with Christoph Waltz as his eminence right behind but they actually tried to act seriously at some points as well. Maybe they didn’t act well enough to get that quirky feel that the director may have been looking for – the cartoony, polar villain/hero complexes. I felt like Orlando Bloom as the Duke of Buckingham was supposed to exhibit this exaggerated attitude too but came off too cool for school. The Three Musketeers had their own profiles going on: Athos was cold, Aramis – the calculated priest and Porthos was the strong man.

The Four Musketeers

This movie doesn’t really add anything to The Three Musketeers legacy just as the 3D didn’t really add anything to the movie experience. They tried doing some cool effects but they all fell flat. You could tell what they were trying to do but the 3D shots never came to fruition. It’s going to be interesting to see if the movie gets a similar response to the Pirates series or Sherlock Holmes because they already set themselves up to make a sequel. I wouldn’t mind watching the next one…it’s a nice movie to leave your brain at home and just watch the flashy eye candy. If you want action, adventure and a movie you can have fun with and laugh at, this one is for you.

WonderCon The Three Musketeers Panel

Sunday, April 3rd, 2011

“Not your mother’s Three Musketeers…no disrespect to any of your mothers out there.” The Three Musketeers panel started off with the trailer and then was accompanied by an exclusive behind the scenes reel. Logan Lerman (D’Artagnan) and Luke Evans (Aramis) took the stage at WonderCon to gleeful young girls.

Logan said he did about 8 months of training for this role before and during the filming of The Three Musketeers. He said it was a lot of training because fencing is a tough sport and they wanted to make this the coolest, most bad ass musketeer movie ever. The Three Musketeers is in 3D and I kind of think they only had the idea to make this movie because they both had the number 3 in it. Any who, they noted that 3D technology is being taken to a new height.

The fight choreographer of this film did man of the Bonds. Luke said that Logan had the hardest fight scene ever. In fencing, the difficult of a set is determined by the points and Logan said that all of his scenes were about 150 points/moves. And these actors were really doing them, no stunt doubles. There were a few cut cheeks and it was pretty dangerous. The swords really spark when they hit, that’s not 3D or an after effect.

The moderator asked what the other stars brought to the film. Jokingly, Logan and Luke answered that Christoph Waltz brought his Oscar everyday kind of like the plot of The Beaver. You had to talk to the Oscar, not Christoph. Then they said acting is like a tennis match going back and forth. They had tons of great actors so it was fun.

So what’s different with this Three Musketeers movies and others from past generations? For on, Logan is actually the age of D’Artagnan in the book, instead of it being played by some middle aged man. They are going to depict an untold chapter and show how the Three Musketeers were really the King’s private army like the James Bond or Navy Seals of their generation. They reiterated each generation should have their own version of The Three Musketeers.

REVIEW: The Green Hornet

Friday, December 17th, 2010

The Green HornetI had a blast with The Green Hornet. I want to say it was a non-stop action-packed thrill ride but it did stop and they really could’ve packed some more action in there. Nonetheless, it was pretty awesome and really funny…Seth Rogen couldn’t quite carry the film himself but he came pretty close. The Green Hornet has everything you’d expect from the franchise: comedy, action, great car scenes, and amazing martial arts. The story is pretty simplistic with your common normal guys trying to be superheroes and take down a bad guy scenario. They do try to mix it up a bit with the modern twists…the movie is pretty much what a stoner/drunk would make if he wanted to make a superhero movie with friends…hilarity ensues.

The Green Hornet movie is based off the original radio show which inspired the film series, tv show with Bruce Lee, and numerous comics. It’s the origin story of the original concept in a completely modernized twist. Britt Reid is a playboy living the good life without a care in the world. Suddenly, however, his father, a newspaper mogul, suddenly dies and leaves the company in his hands. Britt doesn’t want it…instead he wants his regular life to go on including his morning coffee. That’s where Kato comes in and the movie completely shifts gears…pun intended. Kato is a human Swiss army knife who used to fix Britt’s dads cars and coffee. Why would the mechanic make the coffee? They bond over the fact that Britt’s father was Kato’s boss and a dick to the both of them. They even seal their bonding with a serenade of Gangster’s Paradise.

The Green Hornet

Who wouldn't bond over a personal artillery in their garage?

Green Hornet’s comedy is my kind of humor…it’s like Kick-Ass mixed with Adam Sandler movies and Superbad. Seth Rogen is known for this kind of comedic acting. You can hear his off the cuff comments throughout the whole movie and they’ll keep you rolling. Things like “this looks ominous” when confronting some bad guys, “oh man, now we’re in a car chase” as they try and get away from the scene of a crime, and “I think we’re in the hood, Kato” when they see shoes hanging from the telephone lines. Don’t worry, I’m not spoiling anything…there are hundreds of those lines…it’s awesome. Kato has his share of one liners too, don’t worry.
The Green Hornet

Seth Rogen (Green Hornet) and Jay Chou (Kato) in the Black Beauty

If you have troubles understanding foreign accents, you might not like this movie. In the far east corner, we have the Taiwanese superstar Jay Chou who makes his US debut with The Green Hornet. And in the west corner, we have Christoph Waltz, an Austrian-German, who you may remember from Inglorious Basterds. Jay plays The Green Hornet’s sidekick Kato while Waltz is the bad guy; so there’s pretty much one or the other on screen all the time speaking their broken English. Hilariously though (and I have to assume planned) Seth Rogen repeats basically everything Jay says so when the person in the theater next to you nudges you asking “what did he just say!?” Seth Rogen can answer him instead of you. This film is going to do great overseas because of how they chose to cast. Not only does The Green Hornet already have a huge international fan base, they cast three great stars from three very separate locations. Let’s not forget they also cast Cameron Diaz and a couple interesting cameos.
The Green Hornet

Seth Rogen picking out a ...green... tie from Cameron Diaz

My favorite part of the movie has got to be Kato Vision. Basically, the martial arts scenes are slowed down, magnified, twisted, elongated, and then sped up again! It’s pretty intense and impressive. It’s also the only part of the movie I could think that would benefit from the 3D aside from some gimmicks. I saw this movie completely in 2D which it was original shot in (they are doing post 3D conversion). I did get to see the Kato Vision footage in 3D and that is pretty bad ass so I’m not sure whether to recommend the 2D or 3D version. I would probably opt for 2D since this is more of a comedy driven movie and the glasses annoy me.
The Green Hornet

Jay Chou's martial arts is...kick ass!

The problem with this movie is that they tried to cram too much into it. As Green Hornet and Kato become superheroes, Chudnofsky (the bad guy) starts going insane and being as goofy as the duo because he has a ego complex where he needs people to be most scared of him the most. The movie explained this as a mid-life crisis. The Cameron Diaz storyline was also pretty useless where she’s supposed to be the eye candy and get between Britt and Kato but blah, that was boring. I just wanted more Kato Vision and ass kicking! The movie does come to a complete halt in the 2nd act but miraculously it closes out well. It tries to get serious and actually tie-up its story when the audience really just wants a mindless escape into the lives of these crazy guys blowing shit up and making mischief. When the movie got back to that, it was great and kept you going all the way to the end.
The Green Hornet

Boom.
