REVIEW: Mr. Popper’s Penguins

Monday, June 13th, 2011

Mr. Popper's PenguinsMr. Popper always has a plan. Jim Carrey stars as Mr. Tom Popper, Jr., a slick, fast-talking salesman who always closes the deal. Living in a high-rise condo in New York City, he’s divorced with two kids who’d rather hide in their rooms than spend the weekend with him. He prioritizes work over personal past times until a package of penguins pops up at his penthouse pads. Inspired by a children’s book, Mr. Popper’s Penguins is a ridiculous story about dealing with penguins in Manhattan. Surprisingly, even with the crazy concept, the movie is actually a cute wholesome movie that will keep you laughing and leave you with a couple lessons learned.

Mr. Popper’s Penguins is a perfect product for parents to plop their kids in front of. The biggest theme is family: Popper has to win his kids back and get his own family back together. On top of that, he needs to come to terms with his daddy issues. The movie is obviously geared to the young ones but adults will have a fun time too. Carrey is his usual outrageous self but yet not too out there. Sometimes he gets carried away with himself in some flicks but actually fits this character quite well. Ophelia Lovibond plays Pippi, Popper’s personal assistant and she’s my favorite character in the movie. She has a running gag of only talking in alliterations. Alliteration starting with the letter “P” to be exact so kids will also learn some vocabulary (you’ll see a few sentences in this review doing the same as an ode to her ;) ).

Mr. Popper's Penguins

This picture kind of makes Jim Carrey look like The Penguin from Batman...but he's already The Riddler! What a perplexing puzzle :)

To the penguins! There are 6 of them: Loudy, Lovey, Bitey, Stinky, Captain and Nimrod. All the kids are going to want their very own Gentoo penguin after this one. Loudy is, you guessed it, loud and always squawking. Lovey has a heart on his chest and will hug you forever if he could…he’s also quite the ladies’ man. Watch out for Bitey because he greets you with pain. Stay away from Stinky too…I think you know why. Captain is the leader of the bunch and the first to arrive…after seeing a bird fly on TV, that’s all she dreams of doing. I think most of the kid’s favorite will be Nimrod: He’s hilarious running into walls and being his cute clumsy self. The penguins all look great as the movie uses a mix of live penguins as well as digitally animated ones. The credits quickly note that no penguins were harmed but Jim Carrey was bitten numerous times! I honestly couldn’t tell the difference between the computer generated penguins and real ones so the actors did a great job interacting with both puppets and real penguins. Do they train penguins somewhere or are they just natural actors? :P

The supporting cast is top notch: you have Carla Gugino as Amanda, Popper’s ex wife. Madeline Carroll and Maxwell Perry Cotton as their two kids Janie and Billy. The wonderful Angela Lansbury plays Mrs. Van Gundy, the current target of Mr. Popper’s real estate business and Clark Gregg plays Nat Jones, the semi-evil guy from the Zoo who wants to take the penguins. He’s pretty much just like every other villain from similar stories like Cruella de Vil in 101 Dalmatians but with a little twist. There are also some “cool” cameos including Jeffrey Tambor and David Krumholtz. The parts were perfectly picked for the pertaining people in the project.
Mr. Popper's Penguins

Jim Carrey dancing with his penguin pals...word.

There are a few diamonds in Popper’s Penguins that make it really fun. Popper ends up turning his condo into a winter wonderland for the penguins and his kids. He also teaches his penguins an awesome dance that they all do in sync except for one…but we won’t name names (Nimrod :P ). Popper pretty much loses it and gets obsessed with these penguins rather than being obsessed with his job so he has to figure out some balance before he loses everything. I really like wholesome movies for kids and there are some lines I really liked from the movie including, “It’s actually a good memory…sometimes they’re the worse,” and “You have to put your heart out there and it might get broken, but that’s how you know you have one.” People are probably puzzled by this penguin picture and pussyfooting around possibly proceeding to purchase passes but don’t worry, Mr. Popper’s Penguins is pleasantly entertaining. And come on…there are penguins? What’s cooler than being cool penguins? Ice cold penguins.

SXSW REVIEW: Paul

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

PaulTwo of our favorite British comedians set off on a new adventure involving a smart ass alien, religious nuts, more cameos than jokes, and an alien with 3 tits. awesome. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are back at it again with a project they’ve had on the shelf for years. Now that big brother Edgar Wright has gone on to do his own movies, these two decide to have a go with the help of director Greg Mottola and Universal Pictures. If you’re fans of these guys, you’re going to have a good time and laugh but don’t expect too much because it wasn’t written or directed for you, they’re typical target market, it’s water-downed and mass produced for the general audience…making it just another run of the mill sci fi comedy with wasted talent.

Graeme Willy (Simon Pegg) and Clive Gollings (Nick Frost) are two childhood friends from the UK who have finally made it to the geek mecca of the world, Comic Con, to meet one of their inspirations Adam Shadowchild (Jeffrey Tambor – the first of a countless amount of cameos). Since they’ve come such a far way, they decide to rent a RV and go on an alien pilgrimage through the heart of Middle America. Not long after, they find themselves smuggling an alien (voiced by Seth Rogen) to his mother ship on an intergalactic chase. This should sound pretty straightforward, because it is. Paul, in heart, is a spoof on all alien films and concepts to date.

Paul

You would think another finger would be up...

Paul wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t fantastic either. It is hilarious and you will laugh your ass off. There are so many geek and popular culture references that anybody can find something to relate to. They spoof so many different films that you’re bound to have seen at least 3 of them so you can laugh along. They make fun of the movies and themselves at the same time. The cast list is ridiculous, with a few surprises: Jane Lycnh, David Koechner, Jason Bateman, Sigourney Weaver, Bill Hader, Joe Lo Truglio and even the great Steven Spielberg himself. Seth Rogen is the voice of Paul and it fits…his smart alec jokes and antics show on the screen very well. Kristen Wiig plays the other creature escaping…the daughter of a religious redneck. This side story with Kristen making up curse words and trying to be promiscuous at every turn is better than the main story.
Paul

Nick Frost, Kristen Wiig, and Simon Pegg in Paul

I typically love these guys (Spaced, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) and they typically love each other (bromance) but their chemistry was remarkably missing in Paul. While they usually make an effort to really sell the relationship of two best friends, they kind of just went along with the motions in this movie expecting you to already know who they are. They also through in a bunch of silly homosexual jokes which got annoying from the first use. One of many running gags that add to the references and cliches that Paul is loaded with. These guys are excellent comedians, writers, and actors but for Paul, it seems like they phoned it in. Same goes for Greg Motolla who shot a bland movie without taking any chances. As said earlier, this was a made to be a blockbuster/try to please everybody opening weekend kind of movie.
Paul

Pretty iconic visual, eh?

Paul is a caper. It’s a chase film. One crazy event leads to another and another as your core characters try to escape everybody they run into along the way. There are a lot of surprises but none as big as how boring the movie got. The characters are very one-dimensional and easy to like but they don’t leave any lasting impressions. The story is pretty lazy and just filled with things that will get a quick chuckle or smile from the audience…after the first few scenes, there isn’t much of the same laughter left…I expected more, but at least there’s an alien with 3 tits. awesome.

REVIEW: Win Win

Friday, February 18th, 2011

Win WinWin Win is a modern story about a stressed out lawyer trying to provide for his family. While problems keep piling up, he eventually sees that doing the right thing and helping one life in turn helps his own. Hence: Win Win. Paul Giamatti stars as the do-right lawyer who helps old people but then he starts to do-wrong and cheat the system to support his family. One day, a troubled 16 year-old (Alex Shaffer) shows up on his (kind of) doorstep and everything changes.

“It’s complicated” turns into “I didn’t think it would get this complicated.” To support his family and business, Mike Flaherty (Paul Giamatti) decides to become the gaurdian of a client who’s suffering from early stages of dementia. His plan was to cash the checks that his client gets and place him in a retirement home where they could deal with him. All is fine until Kyle (Alex Shaffer), the client’s grandson, shows up. Kyle is a kid with no guidance and Mike is a pilar of the community. Coincidently, Kyle is also an amazing wrestler while Mike coaches the local high school’s wrestling team. Win Win?

At first, the movie is as entertaining as a high school wrestling match…not. Throughout the first half of the movie, the most energetic scene came from a fake YouTube video. However, as you get more involved with the characters and their problems, the movie really takes shape and it becomes as entertaining as a high school wrestling match of somebody you know…pretty damn stellar. The characters really make the movie and you understand where each is coming from by the time the credits roll.

Win Win

Can you slap me? Yeah, but harder

The music was a big problem for me. It was crap and didn’t do anything to support the film. But again, as you got more devoted to the movie, the music began to pick up as well…I’m not sure if this was done on purpose (possibly since a character even noted, “this is a crappy song”) but the soundtrack of the beginning of the film could’ve been a lot better and kept people’s attention (a few audience members did fall asleep).
Win Win

The Flaherty family at church

The whole cast was so good. From the foundation of Paul Giamatti and Amy Ryan as great parents to Jeffrey Tambor and Bobby Cannavale as quirky assistant coaches. I hope Alex Shaffer doesn’t actualy act like his character in real life but his performance as the awkward troubled cool teen was spot on. Melanie Lynskey played the alcholic druggie mom that everybody hated but somehow was also likeable. The smaller characters in David W. Thompson’s Stemler, Burt Young’s Leo, Margo Martindale’s Shelly, and Clare Foley as the Flaherty’s daughter put the bow on this present of a great ensemble cast.
Win Win

Paul Giamatti and Alex Shaffer in Win Win

Win Win offers a lot of heart…something missing in most films these days. Even if you can’t relate to the characters at all, you can understand what they’re going through. I liked how the movie didn’t trying to glamourize any portion of it…it was just very real. Sure it has a sport in it, but it’s not a sports movie. Sure there’s a druggie in it, but it’s not about an intervention. It’s about real solutions to life problems that people have to deal with. We’re not all star wrestlers, coaches, or lawyers but in the end, none of that mattered…we all just have to be human, make it work, and try for the best.

Universal’s Comic-Con Panel: Paul and Cowboys & Aliens

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Paul

From the creators of Shawn of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, comes a hilarious-looking comedy 7 years in the making. Basically, there was bad weather during the scene in Shawn of the Dead where they were outside throwing records at a zombie. They thought to themselves how cool would it be to do a road trip from California down to Wyoming in an RV so they started spit-firing some ideas of an alien movie in the desert. They teamed up with the director of Superbad, Greg Mottola.

Paul

The Paul Panel at Comic-Con

They showed an extended first-cut trailer for us and it looked great! Paul, who is voiced by Seth Rogen, is a bad-mouth bad-ass alien. Some of the lines he said were like, “Hey Fucknuts, it’s probing time!” and in response to, “How can I hear you? Are you using neural translation?” Paul says, “Actually, I’m speaking English you fucking retard.” So you can get a taste of the flavor of this creature from a galaxy far far away…farther than Comic-Con. It was great for the Comic-Con audience because the beginning of Paul is actually set AT Comic-Con. They tried to film at the official San Diego Comic-Con but in the words of the San Diego Fire Marshall: “No Fucking Way.”

The Paul Panel at Comic-Con (side view)

The cast is a collection of some of the greatest comedy actors today including Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), Kristen Wiig (Date Night), Bill Hader (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), Jeffrey Tambor (The Hangover), Joe Lo Truglio (Role Models), Seth Rogen (The Green Hornet), and Sigourney Weaver (Baby Mama).

Cowboys & Aliens

Comic-Con should be renamed Favreau-Con because in the last few years, he has presented some of the best panels and knows how to hype up the crowd. No one knew what he was going to show or who he was going to bring because the film is shooting right now in New Mexico and has only been doing so for about a month. But Jon Favreau knew he had to bring something to Comic-Con to show the crowds so he went straight to the editing room and cut some exclusive scenes for us. The film won’t come out for another year and is to be launched right after the next Comic-Con!
Cowboys & Aliens

Jon Favreau presenting his next film: Cowboys & Aliens

Well I was amazed with how much they showed. We saw the stars of the movie, Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, and Harrison Ford in this old time western. It’s being shot in glorious 2D since Favreau didn’t want to shoot in stereo. Cowboys & Aliens is going to be a by the book western, they’re going to just play it straight but mix it with old sci-fi from before there was CG and then put in the CGI. The footage Favreau backed it up and we got to see the feel of the movie which is truly a western. But what’s that in the sky!? And what’s that on Craig’s wrist?? I can’t wait a year.

Comic-Con is the leading comic book convention in the world. Over the years, it has become a platform for movie studios to debut exclusive information and footage from their upcoming films.
