Comic-Con 2011 Review: Cowboys & Aliens

Monday, July 25th, 2011

Cowboys & Aliens is a strong western with sci-fi thrown in the appropriate spots. It has all the great elements of each genre mashed up into an entertaining movie with action, adventure and lots of laughs. It’s fun and gripping but not as amazing as one would hope…it’s good, not great. The story is pretty straight forward and you get what you would expect from a title of Cowboys & Aliens…it’s the simple folk of a small western town up against technologically advanced aliens. Don’t worry, there is more to that premise later on in the story with some awesome twists but I won’t spoil it for you. All you need to know is: No, it doesn’t suck and Yes, you should go see it if you’re the least interested in what it has to offer.

Daniel Craig is a bad ass right from the very beginning. The movie starts off as a true western coming across a man stranded in the wilderness alone. Three men on horses discover him and the action explodes right away with a scene that gets cheers from the audience. Jon Favreau, director of Cowboys & Aliens, does the smart move of first capturing the interest of western fans with the slow mysterious beginning and then keeping the action fans with a fast-paced beat em up scene that allows the audience to think, “ok, maybe this will be good!” Craig’s character doesn’t know who he is or what’s going on…he just discovers there’s a weird iron gadget on his wrist and quickly learns it can do some startling things. Throughout the movie, he has flashbacks slowly remembering what has happened to him and what he must do.

Cowboys & Aliens

shit.

We then join the rest of this spectacular cast in a classic one road western town. It would be a ghost town if it wasn’t for the cattle of our other big star, Harrison Ford. Ford plays a rugged cowboy who demands respect. It’s a treat to see him in another movie that can actually utilize his talent but I wish he had more screen time and paramount scenes. Other than a few good lines, he didn’t have a big enough screen presence. Joining these two are Paul Dano playing Ford’s son, Sam Rockwell who is the towns Doc and barkeep, Noah Ringer who is our kid star and Olivia Wilde, a hot dame in a dress with a gun holster. For me, Paul Dano is the standout of the supporting cast. Hopefully this role will launch him into stardom as he’s done his fair share of great smaller indie flicks.
Cowboys & Aliens

Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig and Olivia Wilde...on horses

You may say the story is cliche and/or exploiting fans from each genre but it just takes the elements people love from westerns and sci-fis and puts them together. There are actually a lot of similarities in each of the genre’s arcs so nothing seemed out of place. There’s a clear purpose, drive and motivation of the group of cowboys that the movie follows and explains why there are aliens terrorizing these simple people. The juxtaposition is great and the writers played with the concept throughout the film. There’s one early scene where you see the cowboy’s lights via flames on torches and then the alien’s lights via their spaceships. How can cowboys with guns and horses battle aliens with superior technology? Don’t worry, you’ll see.
Cowboys & Aliens

Cowboys & Aliens. Nuff Said.

This isn’t another wait until the last 5 minutes to see the alien type film. It’s not long after the movie starts that you see the first alien act and not much longer after that until you see the actual alien. And these aliens look great! They’re not your common creatures and they bring something new to the table. The movie doesn’t go too in depth to their background or side of the story, but it gives you enough to understand what they’re doing there and what they want. There are some great surprises to keep you engaged in the story as the cowboys uncover the mysteries of what’s happening. Again, Cowboys & Aliens is a straightforward western with sci-fi elements thrown in the right spots. It’s not a game changer and won’t blow your mind, but for the typical moviegoer and sci-fi fan, it’s a fun action-packed western that you won’t fall asleep to and for the western lover, it’s a sci-fi flick you can follow and won’t roll your eyes at! It’s the best of both worlds filed with remarkable talent and a smart script.

REVIEW: Zookeeper

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

ZookeeperZookeeper was silly, goofy and a bit absurd. It has everything you would expect from a movie with talking zoo animals as well as things you would have never thought of. Brought to you by Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison production company, this is a bit of that quirky Sandler comedy skewed for kids (but not as awful as Bedtime Stories). The movie tends to go off track multiple times but somehow finds itself back to an enjoyable movie. Kids are going to like it and I couldn’t help myself from giggling every now and then.

Kevin James stars as Griffin Keyes, the lead zookeeper at Franklin Park Zoo. He’s the best and treats all the animals with respect. The basic plot of the movie is Griffin trying to woo the beautiful Leslie Bibb who plays Stephanie…a girl that Griffin has always had feelings for. Afraid that Griffin might leave the zoo, the animals hatch a plan to get Griffin the girl by turning him into an alpha male. After the initial freak out of hearing animals talk, Griffin starts taking love advice from a bunch of caged captives.

Kids are going to love the animals. They used a combination of live animals, animatronics and computer generated models to make the movie happen. Each animal has their own personality and they’re actually really funny when they talk amongst themselves. Think Madagascar in real life. All the voices are very peculiar and you can pinpoint a lot of them. Nick Nolte plays Bernie the Gorilla while Adam Sandler alters his voice in a familiar way for Donald the Monkey who continually brags about his opposable thumb. Sylvester Stallone is Joe the Lion and Cher is his girl, Janet the Lioness. You can see that the filmmakers just called up a bunch of their friends to voice the animals. Producer Judd Apatow is Barry the Elephant, Director Jon Favreau and Faizon Love are the bickering bears, Jerome and Bruce, and my favorite voice, Maya Rudolph, is Mollie the Giraffe.

The rest of the live cast is great too. Rosario Dawson is in this movie for some reason as Kate, Griffin’s coworker at the zoo. Joe Rogan plays Gale, Stephanie’s evil ex which Griffin has to compete with. Joe’s character is so awkward and spiteful…I couldn’t help but love to hate him. Ken Jeong makes yet another summer appearance as Venom, the quirky snake and reptile expert. It’s almost as if Ken makes a cameo in a movie every single week this summer (The Hangover Part II, Transformers: Dark of the Moon)!
Zookeeper

Bernie the Gorilla and Kevin James in Zookeeper

Zookeeper has a lot of slapstick comedy, a lot of random animal shots and a lot of foolishness…pretty much anything to get a laugh. There’s even a bit of Zoolander in Zookeeper which is kind of weird but actually pretty funny. Kevin James seems to “lose” it a bit in this movie and I couldn’t figure out if it was more of the character or him responding to “What the hell am I doing making this movie?” Either way, it looked really fun to make (they had some bloopers during the credits) and it was pretty fun to watch as well. Obviously, if you buy a ticket to this movie, you know what you’re getting into so just sit back and enjoy it.

WonderCon: Cowboys & Aliens Panel

Saturday, April 2nd, 2011

Cowboys & AliensJon Favreau started by thanking the crowd for his career. He explained how he prefers WonderCon because of the size and intimacy of the convention. He can still have a conversation with the people while Comic Con has turned into a huge festival and party event.

Rob Orci asked Jon if it was twice the difficulty or twice the fun to work with two big stars. He said that Daniel Craig is an awesome professional and great dude. His work in Layer Cake and the Bonds show him as a deep character where the wheels are always turning in his head. Harrison Ford…you know. It was a late breaking idea to cast Ford because they didn’t think it would be doable…they didn’t think he would say yes and come back to genre films. Both care a lot about the procees.

They filmed the movie in Santa Fe for 3 months with some sets in California.

Jon is not in the movie because on Family Guy, Seth Macfarlane made fun of him and he didn’t want to mess with the ton of the film. The movie is fun because of the mashups and juxtapositions of things. He felt that they did it quite well and hit the tone on the head.

They then showed WonderCon an exclusive 8 minutes of footage that won’t be going online and won’t be cut for the trailer. It was purely put together for the WonderCon room only. And we’re the only one’s who are going to get to see the alien before the movie comes out!

The footage starts out with the same footage that they showed at Comic Con last summer…but then it gets crazy. We saw alien ships in the daylight, people getting abducted by tentacle-like wires coming from the ships, blood splattering on old-style western houses, and of course the alien in the end which looked horrifically awesome.

Roberto Orci and Jon Favreau at the COwboys & Aliens panel at WonderCon 2011

When asked if he prefers directing or acting, Jon confidently answered directing. He likes putting everything together from the editing to the sound. Is he going to have an Iron Man 3 cameo? He appreciates Marvel and what they’ve done for his career exposing him to this huge audience but they are going in different directions. He loves them and is open to a cameo.

One audience member asked if they were avoiding putting in historical figures into the movie and Orci answered yes. He noted that there’s no small parts in a Western and that they wanted each character to be relateable. Everyone in the movie even if in it for only 5 minutes, is giving their all. Favreau noted that the fun of Cowboys & Aliens isn’t in making fun of the fact that it’s a Western but blowing the minds of these small people with what they are up against. He loved the historical figures in Deadwood but thinks it would have interfered with this movie and made it less mythic.

In a post Vietnam era, manifest destiny pretty much went out the window. There’s no longer colonialism but just one world. With movies, you can make the aliens an inevitable source of evil and make the cowboys and indians come together to fight them. Did you read that? Cowboys and Indians…I think he accidentally blurted that out because I haven’t seen any footage of Indians yet.

At the end, Favreau said that movies can still be PG-13 and really brutal when they’re not hurting humans ;)

I’m excited for this one, what about you?

Universal’s Comic-Con Panel: Paul and Cowboys & Aliens

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Paul

From the creators of Shawn of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, comes a hilarious-looking comedy 7 years in the making. Basically, there was bad weather during the scene in Shawn of the Dead where they were outside throwing records at a zombie. They thought to themselves how cool would it be to do a road trip from California down to Wyoming in an RV so they started spit-firing some ideas of an alien movie in the desert. They teamed up with the director of Superbad, Greg Mottola.

Paul

The Paul Panel at Comic-Con

They showed an extended first-cut trailer for us and it looked great! Paul, who is voiced by Seth Rogen, is a bad-mouth bad-ass alien. Some of the lines he said were like, “Hey Fucknuts, it’s probing time!” and in response to, “How can I hear you? Are you using neural translation?” Paul says, “Actually, I’m speaking English you fucking retard.” So you can get a taste of the flavor of this creature from a galaxy far far away…farther than Comic-Con. It was great for the Comic-Con audience because the beginning of Paul is actually set AT Comic-Con. They tried to film at the official San Diego Comic-Con but in the words of the San Diego Fire Marshall: “No Fucking Way.”
Paul

The Paul Panel at Comic-Con (side view)

The cast is a collection of some of the greatest comedy actors today including Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), Kristen Wiig (Date Night), Bill Hader (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), Jeffrey Tambor (The Hangover), Joe Lo Truglio (Role Models), Seth Rogen (The Green Hornet), and Sigourney Weaver (Baby Mama).

Cowboys & Aliens

Comic-Con should be renamed Favreau-Con because in the last few years, he has presented some of the best panels and knows how to hype up the crowd. No one knew what he was going to show or who he was going to bring because the film is shooting right now in New Mexico and has only been doing so for about a month. But Jon Favreau knew he had to bring something to Comic-Con to show the crowds so he went straight to the editing room and cut some exclusive scenes for us. The film won’t come out for another year and is to be launched right after the next Comic-Con!
Cowboys & Aliens

Jon Favreau presenting his next film: Cowboys & Aliens

Well I was amazed with how much they showed. We saw the stars of the movie, Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, and Harrison Ford in this old time western. It’s being shot in glorious 2D since Favreau didn’t want to shoot in stereo. Cowboys & Aliens is going to be a by the book western, they’re going to just play it straight but mix it with old sci-fi from before there was CG and then put in the CGI. The footage Favreau backed it up and we got to see the feel of the movie which is truly a western. But what’s that in the sky!? And what’s that on Craig’s wrist?? I can’t wait a year.

REVIEW: Iron Man 2

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Iron Man 2Robert Downey Jr. is Iron Man. And he’s back. You’ve probably been living under a rock if you haven’t seen the first Iron Man and the amazing performance of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. This time, RDJ carries the movie, which without him, would’ve been just another comic book action flick. I’m not saying that the rest of the ensemble didn’t perform well, but RDJ brings the best out of all of them and the back and forth between each character and Tony Stark is incredibly awesome.

Now that the world is armed with the knowledge that Tony Stark and Iron Man are one and the same, the eccentric billionaire is having fun with his ego on a global scale. As he puts it to the United States Senate, he has successfully privatized world peace and nobody is on his level. In fact, he believes that other countries and companies are still five to ten years from figuring out his technology. However, the son of the scientist who worked with Stark’s father to build the original technology has been able to replicate a lot of the tech and he sets off to avenge his father’s death and expose Iron Man’s flaws.

Iron Man 2

Tony Stark in his lab in Iron Man 2

In what seems to be a rehab for actors with drug problems and troubled paths, it’s Mickey Rourke’s time to shine in this franchise as Robert Downey Jr. showed the world how he turned around in the first instalment. Mickey Rourke plays Ivan Vanko, the son of the scientist mentioned and this movies’ main villain. He gives a great performance as a guy with one thing on his mind: revenge. As a physicist himself, he knows how to tinker in his lab and make weaponry for Justin Hammer, the CEO of Stark Enterprises’ competing company. Sam Rockwell plays Justin Hammer who is another eccentric rich guy that seems to always be a few steps behind Tony Stark and only cares about how fat his pockets are.

Gwyneth Paltrow returns as Pepper Potts but Terrence Howard is not back as Rhodey aka Lt. Col. James Rhodes. Instead, we’re blessed with Don Cheadle who I think is much better for the part. His first words in the movie are great and explain the whole situation: “I’m here. It’s me. Let’s move on.” With that, there are a bunch of tongue and cheek one liners and hilarious back and forth dialogue. The story is your typical domino action film where one event sets of another and your hero figures things out just in the nick of time. (A little pun for Nick Fury there played by Samuel L. Jackson and yes, his lines are as punny as mine.) Scarlett Johansson is another new addition to the cast and her beauty takes over the screen but her action scenes are pretty laughable.
Iron Man 2

Iron Man and War Machine face to face in Iron Man 2

All in all, this is definitely an action ride you should take. Iron Man continues to deliver as a clever comedic action movie that will please fans and capture new audiences. If it’s action you want, you’ll get it. If you want a good laugh, it’s here too. If you want to see some eye candy (for the men and women) you won’t be disappointed. The story is straightforward and even includes some unobtanium just like Avatar. The summer blockbuster season is officially open with the release of Iron Man 2 and the Marvel Universe will be sure to give us more and more films. Look out for a couple hidden gems in the movie and a special scene after the credits unveiling the next Marvel character to get his own movie.
