REVIEW: Drive Angry 3D

Friday, February 25th, 2011

Drive Angry 3D is actually a surprisingly fun ride. It might not be a good movie, but it sure was a good time. From the minds of Todd Farmer and Patrick Lussier comes the next experiment in their 3D dominance. They started with the horror My Bloody Valentine in 3D and decided it would be cool to do a 3D movie with fast cars and explosions so BOOM! here is Drive Angry starring a ridiculously cool cast headed by Nicolas Cage, William Fichtner and Billy Burke.

Don’t worry about the plot. I really wish they didn’t even have a story. The movie is bad ass from frame one until the flashbacks of a back story come in. You know it goes downhill from there. If they tried to just be a grindhouse-esque shoot em up with interesting characters, fast cars, and in your face action, this would’ve been a done deal must see. Luckily they don’t care too much for the story so it doesn’t kill it altogether. A lot of plot points aren’t answered and most are just so ridiculous for the point of being ridiculous that it’s fun. The gist of it is a walking contradiction named Milton (Nicolas Cage) is here to revenge his daughter who was murdered by a messiah of the next age, Jonah King (Billy Burke). The Accountant (William Fichtner) is following Milton and his new companion, Piper, played by the drop dead gorgeous Amber Heard.

Drive Angry 3D

The drop dead gorgeous Amber Heard

William Fichtner and Amber Heard steal the show. If you’re a Nicolas Cage fan, he’ll be your favorite, but if not, you’ll hate his character. The Accountant, who walks with reason and doesn’t care about anyone’s feelings, is one of those characters you’re just drawn to and want to know everything about. He calls it how he sees it and has a one track mind. Piper, a southern firecracker who looks great and packs a punch. The ensemble cast doesn’t end there, you get to see Billy Burke, David Morse, and Marc Macaulay all on screen together. Each character’s unique addition to this mishmash of random car chases and gun fights makes the movie enjoyable rather than just another movie.

William Fichtner stole the show...and an FBI badge

If you love badass rock music to get your riled up, you’ll really appreciate this soundtrack. Each song is paired with a scene, and once the action gets turned up, so does the volume. From Peaches’ “Fuck the Pain Away,” to “Deaf Leading the Blind,” from Flatlined and of course AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell.” There’s one completely amazingly ridiculous scene where Milton has a one night stand right before and during a gun fight. “I never disrobe before a gun fight.” As you can see, the lines in the movie are as pointless as the movie itself but there are quite a few winners that’ll make you chuckle.
Drive Angry 3D

So were you laughing with Nicolas Cage or at him?

For mindless fun (which is what movies should be, right?), Drive Angry is a sure thing. You won’t get what you’re expecting and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. You’ll be laughing with the movie (rather than at it), you’ll be Oh, and yes, these guys know how to do 3D. They’re some of the pioneers in the area and they really keep improving their craft. This is a great mix of the gimmicky in your face stuff people still want with the layered immersive 3D that makes you forget you’re wearing the glasses. You’ll have fun. Leave your brain in the backseat and just Drive Angry.

REVIEW: Season of the Witch

Friday, January 7th, 2011

Season of the WitchFrom the very beginning of the movie, I couldn’t believe Season of the Witch was rated PG-13. Either I don’t remember being thirteen or thirteen year-olds these days are a lot more desensitized. Season of the Witch begins with a hanging and drowning of three witches…or does it? How can you tell who is a witch and who isn’t a witch? Am I a witch? Are you a witch? Which witch would watch this witch movie?? I’m sorry I’m going nowhere…kinda like this movie did.

Nicolas Cage stars alongside Ron Perlman in the supernatural period buddy journey movie Season of the Witch. That’s about all the good you’re going to read about this movie. I feel like everyone who didn’t get work on another film made this movie. The sound was crap, the script was lame, directing and cinematography left a lot to be desired, the visual effects were sub par, and the acting was ridiculously terrible. The only good thing I could think of was the makeup…not for the realism but for the digustingness. Did I invent a word there?

After fighting for God as crusaders and deserting after realizing they were killing for the Church instaed, Behmen (Nicolas Cage) and Felson (Ron Perlman) stumble on a town plagued by…The Plague. They come to learn that this terrible disease is a curse brought upon them by a witch (Claire Foy) which the town has captured. The ex-crusaders are asked to set off on a journey to some Monk temple so they can deal with the witch which Behmen doesn’t believe is an actual witch. Which do you believe?

Season of the Witch

Group of guys carrying a young girl in a cage...nothing suspicious here

Accompanying a priest, knight, guide, and alter boy, they make up motley crew to escort the caged witch which preys on the weaknesses of her captures. Can you guess who’s going to die and which order? It’s always fun to play that game. It’s probably the most fun you can have watching this movie. It’s a boring journey to the Monks’ house as they have to go through the overused evil forest and cross the cliche bridge on it’s last straw that can only manage to stay up just long enough so they cross. You know the deal from every other movie where they have to travel by horse. It’s as if they threw a bunch of different movies together and used the sets from a bunch of others…it was a mishmash of crap.
Season of the Witch

Nicolas Cage and Hellboy. That would've been a much better movie right there.

But right before you’re about to walk out the theater or fall asleep on your neighbor’s shoulder, something changes! Something happens! And man oh man are you ready for some kick ass Nicolas Cage level action…The movie does flip a switch but it’s too little too late. There’s a whole explanation which puts everything into focus and then a climatic all or nothing fight scene but in the end all you’ll be able to say is “yay?” Lots of people will be walking about before the final credits roll…and I don’t blame em.

Summit’s Drive Angry 3D

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

From the director who brought us My Bloody Valentine 3D, Patrick Lussier, comes Drive Angry 3D. He said that the difference between Bloody Valentine was that it was a suspense and he wanted to do an action film in 3D. Drive Angry is pure action. He’s one of the few directors who has already completed a 3D movie (real 3D, not conversion) so you’re going to see some of the best effects and storytelling through the new dimension.

Drive Angry 3D Comic-Con Panel

Patrick Lussier, Nicolas Cage, Amber Heard, and William Fichtner

Nicolas Cage stars in the film along with Amber Heard and William Fichtner. Nic said that there’s no question that he prefers characters who raise more questions than answers. This role falls into those lines since it’s a mysterious character from Hell with some supernatural powers. His daughter was killed and they took her child so all he has left is this baby girl. That’s his drive but other than that you don’t know what’s behind him…he doesn’t do drugs but indulges in sugar every now and then.

On the director, Nic said that Patrick is a purist. This is the first time that he (Nicolas Cage) could play with 3D and he wanted to see what moves he could do and how he could change the format. With Patrick, he felt like he was in good hands and had a lot of conversations with him on the subject. There’s no secret that Nicolas Cage likes to drive and likes to drive fast so this was a great role for him. He had the same stunt guy as he did for Gone in 60 Seconds so he got to collaborate with him again.

Nicolas Cage and Amber Heard

Drive Angry 3D is an anti-hero 70s action film in 3D. They started writing the film around groundhogs day and that’s where the title comes from…you know Bill Murray’s line where he says, “don’t drive angry.” That’s apparently for the opening scene which they thought of first and built the rest of the movie from that. Amber Heard said that the movie is “fast cars, big guns, and fist fights” which is what attracted her to the film but then noted, “but maybe that’s the Texas in me.” William wasn’t in muscle cars as much as his co-stars but he kept mentioning a hydrogen tanker so I’m really curios to see those scenes now. He made it a point to say that this film is wild and fast.

This film comes out February 11, 2011 which means it’s opening for Valentine’s Day! This is obviously for the ladies because the bumper sticker on the back of Nicolas Cage’s car read: “I Brake 4 Pussy.”

REVIEW: The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

Friday, July 9th, 2010

The Sorcerer's ApprenticeI was disappointed but I had pretty high hopes. I was looking forward to this movie because there was so much potential in almost every aspect of the production. You have a coming of age story mixed with magic and adventure, sound familiar? This is definitely going to be compared to Harry Potter and sadly, it doesn’t hold a candle next to it. But even so, it does conjure up an adventure for kids and fans of movies like the National Treasure series which shares the same director (Jon Turteltaub) and producer (Jerry Bruckheimer) as The Sorcerer’s Apprentice as well as the star, Nicolas Cage.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is about a very old prophecy set by the great sorcerer Merlin himself and carried out for centuries by one of Merlin’s three apprentices, Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) while battling his arch-nemesis who used to be his best friend and one of Merlin’s other apprentices, Maxim Horvath played by Alfred Molina. My first gripe of this movie is all the back story that they tried to stuff into the first five minutes. I was sitting next to a parent and her child and both of them were lost trying to explain what was going on to each other before the opening credits were even finished. I even got lost in some of the mumbo jumbo that was thrown together. There’s a lot of fluff in the story that I feel was unneeded…just get to the action!

777-Level Sorcerer Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) and his arch-nemesis Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina)

The action scenes and special effects were pretty cool. The post-production on this film is probably the highlight of it all. The magic in this movie is truly more on the sorcerer side rather than the magic wand side…you get plasma balls, metamorphosis, clever tricks, and a hard-hitting raging bull. The visual effects are as cool as the sorcery itself and adds a great dimension to the movie. I’m actually very glad Disney didn’t decide to do this movie in 3D, it would’ve messed up the grimey feel that it had. Those things aside, the plot was weak. I did expect more from a story that’s inspired from the classic film Fantasia. However, my favorite scene from The Sorcerer’s Apprentice was the dancing mops and brooms which is straight from the inspiring scene of Fantasia this movie is based upon. There are a few scenes that you can smile about and you’ll get a chuckle from some of the awkward conversations between sorcerer and apprentice but that’s all you’ll get: a chuckle.

The Sorcerer (Nicolas Cage) and his Apprentice (Jay Baruchel)

It was great to see the magic in the real world that we live in. The movie is based in New York and the bulk of the movie is set in modern day so kids and adults alike can see themselves being magicians and sorcerers in their own daily lives. The movie tries hard to make science “cool” as the sorcerer’s apprentice Dave played by Jay Baruchel is a physics nerd and explains a bunch of the magic in science terms. I don’t think it quite succeeded in this goal since Jay’s character was an annoying nerd who was just awkward (and not the good awkward like one of Michael Cera’s characters). He was even worse than his persona in She’s Out Of My League which was bearable and improved throughout that movie. In this movie, I got a bit peeved with his voice alongside the whispers of Nic Cage. In the end our scientific sorcerer, Dave, does get the girl, but who wouldn’t get the girl with plasma balls forming from their bare hands? (sorry if you think this is a spoiler but it’s incredibly predictable) Hopefully some kids get turned on to Physics from this movie, but I doubt there will be many converts…you’ll probably just get more kids playing Magic: The Gathering.

On that note, I think there should be a new film award for product placement because it’s starting to get ridiculous. This movie has so much product placement subtly positioned in scenes that you would think they were just coincidently there while the crew was shooting. I think I might start documenting the product placement in movies in a “Sponsored By” section, what do you guys think?

REVIEW: Kick-Ass

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Kick-AssThe movie lives up to the hype! I missed countless screenings and heard many peoples’ reactions to the film throughout the past few weeks so my expectations fluctuated with every person I talked to. Still, I was surprised with what I saw and smiled from beginning to end…it was exceptional and well delivered. Kick-Ass is the story about a regular kid living at home with his dad. He goes through the regular routine day to day: going to school, hanging with friends, and generally being unimportant. He’s not into sports, isn’t popular, and doesn’t have any special skills at all. He constantly thinks to himself why nobody has ever tried to become a superhero. He thinks the comic books have it wrong – you don’t need to have special powers, you just need to have a mix of optimism and naivety.

If you haven’t guessed yet, Dave decides to become a superhero. He buys a scuba suit from the internet and transforms himself into Kick-Ass. The movie takes a real look into what could happen to someone who actually tries to do this and throws a lot of unexpected twists at you. They are great! You expect one thing going into a comic book movie like this and are shown something completely different, fresh, and original.

Kick-Ass and Red Mist hanging out in the Mistmobile

If you have seen any of the trailers or marketing materials, you’ve met Hit-Girl and her dad, Big Daddy. Chloe Moretz and Nicolas Cage play amazing roles which could have been made into a movie in itself. They really add an element to the film which puts it over the top for me. There’s going to be plenty of backlash and opposition for the story line, but I think it was scripted and depicted really well. The relationship between them is very strong and realistic and sure to bring some tears to some audience members’ eyes. You didn’t expect that from this movie, did ya?

Hit-Girl from Kick-Ass

Hit-Girl from Kick-Ass

Be forewarned, this movie is gruesome, vulgar, and out there. If you’re not into violence, this isn’t the movie for you. There are scenes where you would expect for the camera to turn away but instead you have to turn away yourself. But that’s not all the movie has to offer – it’s really funny and the action scenes are amazing. On top of all that, the music contributes so much to every single scene…the score is wonderful. You’ll have your head bopping and wondering where you can get the soundtrack afterwards…or buy all the songs off of iTunes if they’re not already in your collection.

The sound effects and music add to the cinematography of the film which go through a range of different views. There is a comic book style drawing sequence with 3D (not 3D glasses 3D), there is strobe light-esque scene, fantasy scene, night vision, multiple camera views, etc, etc. Pretty much you’re on a wild ride and it’s fun as hell. There are some sequences which reminded me a lot of a movie called Equilibrium and if you remember the action scenes with Gun Kata where they combined guns and martial arts, that gives you an idea of the awesomeness that you can expect from this film.

Big Daddy and Hit Girl talking to Kick-Ass

Big Daddy and Hit Girl talking to Kick-Ass

So far, Kick-Ass is the best movie of the year. My friend commented that he couldn’t remember a movie where he had so much fun in the theater. Not only were people clapping when the credits rolled, they were clapping during the movie. Kick-Ass is in your face and never stops delivering – the only bad thing with this film is that it leaves you wanting more! GO SEE IT!

WonderCon: The Lionsgate Kick-Ass Panel

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Kick-AssKick-Ass has been getting a lot of marketing and promotion or maybe I’m just in their target market. I missed the screening and panel for Kick-Ass at South By Southwest but luckily Lionsgate presented another one at WonderCon. All of the stars, Nicolas Cage (Big Daddy), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Red Mist), Clark Duke (Marty), Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass), Chloe Moretz (Hit-Girl) were in attendance to talk about the movie and answer some questions from the audience. Kick-Ass is about a regular kid with no real problems or challenges in his life who one day decides to become a superhero even though he has no super powers or training at all. It looks hilarious and violent…what more can you ask for?

So why Kick-Ass? When there are so many comic books and graphic novels out there, why did they choose a relatively new story to make a movie? Screenwriter, Jane Goldman, said that it takes the whole idea of the superhero genre from a different angle. Most of the other comics are old so all of the characters have been around for ages. All of the characters from Kick-Ass are brand new and quite groundbreaking. The idea of being a regular kid and wanting to become a costumed super hero resonates in a lot of people. Co-producer, John Romita Jr., said that Mark Miller claims that Kick-Ass is exactly what he wanted to do. He worked out, took martial arts, and planned to buy a costume.

When asked why he chose this movie, Nicolas Cage said that he tries to find scripts that give him a challenge, something he can’t really do in real life. When he saw that he would be shooting a twelve year-old girl in the chest, it made him uncomfortable…so he had to do it. He also likes to stay relevant to the current generation so seeing this script and knowing it would be casted by mostly younger people and target the younger market, he wanted to get in on it.

The most controversial part of this movie will inevitably be Hit-Girl played by Chloe Moretz. In the movie, she’s a bad ass twelve year-old girl who’s violent and vulgar. Jane Goldman said that she really saw Hit-Girl as a strong female character. It’s not very often when you can get a strong female character that isn’t a sex symbol or looked at in a sexist way. Chloe, on the other hand seems like your typical innocent girl. She almost spit out the water she was drinking when a scene of hers played on the big screen where she mentioned a certain male body part. An audience member asked her what her parents thought of the role and she answered that her mother read the script before she did and told her to read it and let her know what she thought. She thought it was an awesome role and the rest was herstory.

I didn’t get to go to the WonderCon screening of the film either, but I will be attending a screening tonight and can’t wait. We’ll have a full review for you guys tomorrow!

WonderCon: The Disney Panel (Prince of Persia, Sorcerer’s Apprentice, and Toy Story 3)

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Disney started their showcase with a first look at Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time starring Jake Gyllenhaal, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, and directed by Mike Newell…all three were in attendance to talk about the movie. Prince of Persia is based on the popular video game of the same name. It follows the adventures of a prince who stumbles upon a mythical object which can affect time itself. He teams up with the princess of his rivals to stop a sandstorm which would end of the world. From what they showed and said, it’s definitely an action-packed summer blockbuster but Jerry kept highlighting the points that it would have lots of comedy and romance. Pretty much, it’s trying to have mass appeal and target the largest market possible. It was filmed in Morocco where it was said to be over a hundred degrees every day. Additionally, they sent teams around the world to take authentic pictures and bring back the images to build unique sets. But even with that backdrop, a lot of the movie will be computer generated. The footage they showed looked very common and bland. Granted, it’s still early and the scenes weren’t polished up yet. However, the time travel affects with the sand looked awesome as well as the scenes with snakes…they did some really cool things there. It’s reminiscent of the director, Mike Newell’s work in Harry Potter, very magical. You can expect a lot of free running/parkour type stuff from Jake who literally runs up walls.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time comes out May 28, 2010.

Jerry Bruckheimer stayed in his seat as the panels changed because he was presenting his 2nd upcoming film with Disney, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice starring Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel and is directed by Jon Turteltaub. Set in modern-day, a college student in New York City finds himself in a magical battle between good and evil. He is destined to become a great and powerful sorcerer trained by an old wizard by the name of Balthazar. On the plot, Jon Turteltaub commented on how fundamental this plot is to Disney and that it originated from a segment in Fantasia. He comically said that obviously they’re not doing a cartoon for two hours of a mop (even though the iconic sequence of the mop is in the film). To me, the footage looked amazing. This is going to be a homerun for Disney and regain them some lost fans while gaining them a lot of new ones from the younger generation who has no idea what Fantasia is and would definitely not sit through it today. You can tell it’s still geared towards kids, but it looks really funny and entertaining…kind of a Harry Potter like feel. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice looks at magic a different way than Harry Potter though. Turteltaub said he wanted to create a very realistic and modern weird feeling as if you were in this world with the characters on the screen and then the magic would enter all of our lives.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice opens on July 16, 2010.

Toy Story 3Finally, Disney’s last film showcased was a continuation of a little known franchise from Disney Pixar called Toy Story 3. The third film in this series follows the characters as they are abandoned in a day care while their owner, Andy, goes away to college. At first, to all of the toys except Woody, it looks like a paradise but kids love new toys…The director, Lee Unkrich, said that it took two days in a cabin to come up with the story but over two and half years of storyboarding and fine tuning. He felt the pressure of taking this huge franchise and creating a third feature length film every day of the process of making it but it doesn’t look like he failed…every time a new character was shown to the audience, there was a collective “awww.” There’s no doubt in my mind that this film will resonate with the new generation of kids and that the old fans will flock back to see the new instalment. When an audience member asked Jeff Garlin about improvising in the movie he said that when the script is good, he doesn’t like to improvise. He likes to improvise in order to help a movie out but with Wall-E and Toy Story 3, he felt that the scripts were great so that should give you an idea of how good this one is going to be.

Toy Story 3 arrives in theaters on June 18, 2010.

Remember, they are doing a special cliffhanger screening (first hour of the movie) for college students. You can see if your city is included here: Toy Story 3 Advance Screenings
