REVIEW: 50/50

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

Adam is a 27 year young guy who doesn’t smoke, doesn’t drink and recycles. He even waits at the cross walk when nobody else is on the road. How could a good guy like that be diagnosed with cancer? 50/50 is a dark comedy with a ridiculously well-balanced blend of both comedy and drama…you can almost say it’s 50/50. Don’t get scared away by the subject matter; it is serious, but it’s not all depressing. Joseph Gordon-Levitt does an incredible job depicting a range of emotions and states that his character must go through. Director Jonathan Levine doesn’t shy away from anything associated with this terminal illness and pulls at every heart string you have. I loved it.

Don’t worry, I didn’t spoil the movie, you find out Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) has cancer quite early in the film. The whole movie is watching him cope with it. But cancer isn’t the only thing he has to cope with, he has to deal with his relationship with girlfriend Rachael (Bryce Dallas Howard), his overprotective mom (Anjelica Huston), selfish best bud Kyle (Seth Rogen) and talks with a newbie psychiatrist Dr. McKay (Anna Kendrick) who is training to get her doctorates. It’s fascinating to see Adam’s transition as he goes through chemotherapy treatment and how people…treat him. The story is pretty straightforward but keeps you engaged the whole way. Keep your tissues close.

50/50

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen in 50/50

The entire cast does an outstanding job in this picture but Joseph Gordon-Levitt is stellar. He plays Adam as a calm, collected young adult who seems to be in disbelief. How would you react if you were told you had cancer? Even though you’re seeing almost the entire movie through his perspective, you can really never tell what is actually going on in his head. The few emotional outbursts that he does have throughout the film remind you of how great an actor Gordon-Levitt is and how consistent he is from scene to scene. The make-up department also deserves a shout out because you could see Adam’s image deteriorate as the story continues. If you’ve ever experienced cancer first hand, it will be startling how realistic it feels.
50/50

I think this was the best treatment in 50/50. Fire heals all.

You may be reminded of the movie Funny People which Seth Rogen also stars in. Funny enough, Rogen pretty much plays the same exact character – the friend to the guy with cancer. To me, this was classic Seth Rogen and he killed it once again…he’s hilarious! Rogen’s character, Kyle, is a slightly obnoxious guy who only thinks of himself. He hates Adam’s girlfriend and just wants to get high or laid all the time. Who can play that part better than Seth Rogen? Anna Kendrick plays the 24 year-old psychiatrist straight out of school who tries to comfort Adam through therapy sessions. She’s completely textbook and foolishly tries to use her medical teachings on Adam. She’s naive and cute and I loved her as well. Adam also interacts with other cancer patients one of which is Philip Baker Hall who gives yet another great performance. They swap stories, advice and weed cookies.
50/50

Anna Kendrick can touch me any day

50/50 is an excellent movie and is not to be missed. If you think you’re going to cry in this movie, you will. It has some seriously emotional scenes but at the same time, has very uplifting and comical parts too. Whenever I thought they were going to take the movie in one direction, they switched it up so it wasn’t too heavy or too light. What resulted was a beautiful mix of emotions. You can’t help but empathize with Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character, he was just an everyday you or me who suddenly met face to face with a life-changing dilemma. The film perfectly portrayed the seriousness of the issue while offering a real perspective that walked the line of funny and heartfelt. It’s not a 50/50 question of whether you’re going to like it or not…you will.

REVIEW: Kung Fu Panda 2

Monday, May 16th, 2011

Kung Fu Panda 2Kung Fu Panda 2 was fantastic! It was so much fun from beginning to end combining a funny yet heartwarming story, killer Kung Fu moves and incredible 3D. Dreamworks Animation is quickly becoming my favorite animation studio. Last year, How To Train Your Dragon was my favorite animated film and I’m predicting that Kung Fu Panda 2 will be my favorite this year. Jack Black is back in his best form (a panda) along with Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen and the list goes on. I had such a good time watching this that I was smiling from ear to ear and literally laughing out loud. Kids and adults alike are going to love this movie.

Kung Fu Panda 2 jumps right in with characters we remember from the last movie: Dragon Master and his kung-fu idols, the Furious Five: Po (Jack Black), Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Viper (Lucy Liu), and Crane (David Cross). Quickly, we’re in an eye-popping 3D battle with amazing Kung Fu choreography. The action scenes are by far the coolest part of the movie and the way they utilized the 3D was refreshing. There’s no doubt that this movie should be seen in 3D and it really teaches a lesson to every other movie company on how it’s supposed to be done. There are weapons flying right at you, crazy camera angles that emphasize the action and even a few gimmicky scenes that will make kids of all ages laugh. The movie has just begun and the initial fight scene makes you sit up in your seat and let you know that you’re in for a great movie.

Kung Fu Panda 2

Dragon Master Po and the Furious Five!

Other than the 3D, another great element of Kung Fu Panda 2 is the use of various animation styles. The movie begins with some background filler of our new villain, an albino peacock named Lord Shen (Gary Oldman), using Chinese abstract drawings. There are also flashbacks of Po’s origin which use a completely different animation style. These different styles were a great way to separate the various story lines and time periods of the movie. You also get to see the cutest baby panda evar which will get a synchronized group “aww” from every audience member. The whole movie was visually stunning and by using different animated techniques, the Dreamworks team got to have a lot of fun, be innovate, creative and show their numerous skills.
Kung Fu Panda 2

cutest. panda. baby. evar.

All the great visuals would mean nothing without a great story to go along with it and Kung Fu Panda 2 has a great story. The movie has very strong themes of time (past, present, future), technology, family and inner peace. Lord Shen, a vengeful peacock wants to control his future (as well as the whole country of China) and sets out to create a powerful weapon that Kung Fu can’t stop. Master Shifu sends Po and the Furious Five to assist other Kung Fu masters that Po idolizes and stop Lord Shen from taking over China. But Po must first find inner peace by remembering his past, finding out who his true parents are, where he came from and figure out who he is. The scene where Po confronts his (obviously) adopted father, the noodle-making Goose, Mr. Ping (James Hong), is hilarious.

Master Shifu sends the Kung Fu Masters to save China

Like Kung Fu, the movie taught great lessons while being a spectacle in itself. There are a couple scenes where the characters just jumped off the screen and you had no choice but to smile in wonderment. The script was so funny and definitely my kind of comedy with off screen comments and back and forth word play. You can always expect Po to come up with some crazy line that Jack Black delivers so well. Even in the most serious scenes, the script allows for some great laughs to come out at any time. The voice acting was of course superb with an all star cast including the aforementioned as well as newcomers Jean-Claude Van Damme, Michelle Yeoh, Dennis Haysbert and Victor Garber. Kung Fu Panda 2 was better than the original…and I loved the original. I don’t see this franchise going anywhere but up. There’s nothing at the end of the credits but there is a surprise ending! Ska2oosh!

REVIEW: The Green Hornet

Friday, December 17th, 2010

The Green HornetI had a blast with The Green Hornet. I want to say it was a non-stop action-packed thrill ride but it did stop and they really could’ve packed some more action in there. Nonetheless, it was pretty awesome and really funny…Seth Rogen couldn’t quite carry the film himself but he came pretty close. The Green Hornet has everything you’d expect from the franchise: comedy, action, great car scenes, and amazing martial arts. The story is pretty simplistic with your common normal guys trying to be superheroes and take down a bad guy scenario. They do try to mix it up a bit with the modern twists…the movie is pretty much what a stoner/drunk would make if he wanted to make a superhero movie with friends…hilarity ensues.

The Green Hornet movie is based off the original radio show which inspired the film series, tv show with Bruce Lee, and numerous comics. It’s the origin story of the original concept in a completely modernized twist. Britt Reid is a playboy living the good life without a care in the world. Suddenly, however, his father, a newspaper mogul, suddenly dies and leaves the company in his hands. Britt doesn’t want it…instead he wants his regular life to go on including his morning coffee. That’s where Kato comes in and the movie completely shifts gears…pun intended. Kato is a human Swiss army knife who used to fix Britt’s dads cars and coffee. Why would the mechanic make the coffee? They bond over the fact that Britt’s father was Kato’s boss and a dick to the both of them. They even seal their bonding with a serenade of Gangster’s Paradise.

The Green Hornet

Who wouldn't bond over a personal artillery in their garage?

Green Hornet’s comedy is my kind of humor…it’s like Kick-Ass mixed with Adam Sandler movies and Superbad. Seth Rogen is known for this kind of comedic acting. You can hear his off the cuff comments throughout the whole movie and they’ll keep you rolling. Things like “this looks ominous” when confronting some bad guys, “oh man, now we’re in a car chase” as they try and get away from the scene of a crime, and “I think we’re in the hood, Kato” when they see shoes hanging from the telephone lines. Don’t worry, I’m not spoiling anything…there are hundreds of those lines…it’s awesome. Kato has his share of one liners too, don’t worry.
The Green Hornet

Seth Rogen (Green Hornet) and Jay Chou (Kato) in the Black Beauty

If you have troubles understanding foreign accents, you might not like this movie. In the far east corner, we have the Taiwanese superstar Jay Chou who makes his US debut with The Green Hornet. And in the west corner, we have Christoph Waltz, an Austrian-German, who you may remember from Inglorious Basterds. Jay plays The Green Hornet’s sidekick Kato while Waltz is the bad guy; so there’s pretty much one or the other on screen all the time speaking their broken English. Hilariously though (and I have to assume planned) Seth Rogen repeats basically everything Jay says so when the person in the theater next to you nudges you asking “what did he just say!?” Seth Rogen can answer him instead of you. This film is going to do great overseas because of how they chose to cast. Not only does The Green Hornet already have a huge international fan base, they cast three great stars from three very separate locations. Let’s not forget they also cast Cameron Diaz and a couple interesting cameos.
The Green Hornet

Seth Rogen picking out a ...green... tie from Cameron Diaz

My favorite part of the movie has got to be Kato Vision. Basically, the martial arts scenes are slowed down, magnified, twisted, elongated, and then sped up again! It’s pretty intense and impressive. It’s also the only part of the movie I could think that would benefit from the 3D aside from some gimmicks. I saw this movie completely in 2D which it was original shot in (they are doing post 3D conversion). I did get to see the Kato Vision footage in 3D and that is pretty bad ass so I’m not sure whether to recommend the 2D or 3D version. I would probably opt for 2D since this is more of a comedy driven movie and the glasses annoy me.
The Green Hornet

Jay Chou's martial arts is...kick ass!

The problem with this movie is that they tried to cram too much into it. As Green Hornet and Kato become superheroes, Chudnofsky (the bad guy) starts going insane and being as goofy as the duo because he has a ego complex where he needs people to be most scared of him the most. The movie explained this as a mid-life crisis. The Cameron Diaz storyline was also pretty useless where she’s supposed to be the eye candy and get between Britt and Kato but blah, that was boring. I just wanted more Kato Vision and ass kicking! The movie does come to a complete halt in the 2nd act but miraculously it closes out well. It tries to get serious and actually tie-up its story when the audience really just wants a mindless escape into the lives of these crazy guys blowing shit up and making mischief. When the movie got back to that, it was great and kept you going all the way to the end.
The Green Hornet

Boom.

Universal’s Comic-Con Panel: Paul and Cowboys & Aliens

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Paul

From the creators of Shawn of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, comes a hilarious-looking comedy 7 years in the making. Basically, there was bad weather during the scene in Shawn of the Dead where they were outside throwing records at a zombie. They thought to themselves how cool would it be to do a road trip from California down to Wyoming in an RV so they started spit-firing some ideas of an alien movie in the desert. They teamed up with the director of Superbad, Greg Mottola.

Paul

The Paul Panel at Comic-Con

They showed an extended first-cut trailer for us and it looked great! Paul, who is voiced by Seth Rogen, is a bad-mouth bad-ass alien. Some of the lines he said were like, “Hey Fucknuts, it’s probing time!” and in response to, “How can I hear you? Are you using neural translation?” Paul says, “Actually, I’m speaking English you fucking retard.” So you can get a taste of the flavor of this creature from a galaxy far far away…farther than Comic-Con. It was great for the Comic-Con audience because the beginning of Paul is actually set AT Comic-Con. They tried to film at the official San Diego Comic-Con but in the words of the San Diego Fire Marshall: “No Fucking Way.”
Paul

The Paul Panel at Comic-Con (side view)

The cast is a collection of some of the greatest comedy actors today including Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), Kristen Wiig (Date Night), Bill Hader (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), Jeffrey Tambor (The Hangover), Joe Lo Truglio (Role Models), Seth Rogen (The Green Hornet), and Sigourney Weaver (Baby Mama).

Cowboys & Aliens

Comic-Con should be renamed Favreau-Con because in the last few years, he has presented some of the best panels and knows how to hype up the crowd. No one knew what he was going to show or who he was going to bring because the film is shooting right now in New Mexico and has only been doing so for about a month. But Jon Favreau knew he had to bring something to Comic-Con to show the crowds so he went straight to the editing room and cut some exclusive scenes for us. The film won’t come out for another year and is to be launched right after the next Comic-Con!
Cowboys & Aliens

Jon Favreau presenting his next film: Cowboys & Aliens

Well I was amazed with how much they showed. We saw the stars of the movie, Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, and Harrison Ford in this old time western. It’s being shot in glorious 2D since Favreau didn’t want to shoot in stereo. Cowboys & Aliens is going to be a by the book western, they’re going to just play it straight but mix it with old sci-fi from before there was CG and then put in the CGI. The footage Favreau backed it up and we got to see the feel of the movie which is truly a western. But what’s that in the sky!? And what’s that on Craig’s wrist?? I can’t wait a year.

Comic-Con is the leading comic book convention in the world. Over the years, it has become a platform for movie studios to debut exclusive information and footage from their upcoming films.
