REVIEW: Megamind

Monday, October 25th, 2010

MegamindFrom the animation studio who brought you Shrek, Kung Fu Panda and their most recent work, How to Train Your Dragon comes Megamind. It’s an action comedy about the lifelong rivalry between a super hero and super villain from two distant planets. What’s the difference between a super villain and a regular old villain? Presentation! And this movie is presented in Mega 3D. Great voice actors lend their personas for this movie including Will Ferrell, Jonah Hill, Tina Fey, David Cross, and Brad Pitt. The comedy is witty and the story is very predictable but it still does offer up a good time…for adults. I’m not sure this one will translate with children that much.

In a nutshell, Megamind got the short stick in life. As he laid it out in the opening narration, “even fate picks its favorites.” Metro Man landed in the lap of luxury while Megamind landed in prison. He ended up figuring out that no matter how hard he tried, everyone perceived him as bad. So he decided to be the best bad guy out there…a super villain! He would have epic battles between his arch nemesis Metro Man in a tug-of-war of power until one day something happened and all that changed. It’s a story about good vs evil and why being bad may be good. Or is it that good may be bad? There’s a tongue twister somewhere in there…

Megamind

.....soooooooooo predictable

This is the kind of comedy you would get if you mixed The Office with Saturday Night Live and every Will Ferrell movie ever made. I heard a lot of the laughter coming from the older members of the audience but the kids would only laugh from the slapstick physical humor. Megamind’s Minion fish will be their favorite character but other than that, I don’t see much kids can root for in this movie. From the ambiguously gay relationship between Megamind and his Minion to the anti-relationships between TV Reporter, Roxanne Ritchi and every other character in the movie, there are a lot of adult themes in Megamind.

The story is pretty predictable even without watching the latest trailer. But if you’ve seen the latest trailer, you’ve seen the whole movie. Dreamworks did the same thing with the last trailer for How to Train Your Dragon…they end up giving away pivotal scenes that spoil a lot of the turning points in the movie. They expose the entire plot and leave nothing to the imagination. The only scenes left out of the trailer were the dull ones. It would be a shame if this movie actually had some unpredictable events. Luckily enough, the jokes and humor aren’t wasted on a spoiled storyline…there are still a lot of quotable quotes thanks to Will Ferrell and Tina Fey’s delivery.
Megamind

Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill and their animated alter-egos

You can literally picture Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, and Jonah Hill in Megamind. Some of the scenes and jokes were definitely written for them in mind. Megamind keeps mispronouncing words and Will Ferrell delivers them perfectly in only a way that he can. Tina Fey’s quirkyness comes out in Roxanne Ritchi’s character especially during a moment when Megamind and her are outside Megamind’s old school and she gets “gangsta”. Jonah Hill’s character Hal physically looks like him and you could see him playing the character in a live action version of the movie.
Megamind

My favorite character may have been Minion's boombox...the music was great!

The music in this film is also a great compliment. The soundtrack contains such rock hits as “Bad to the Bone”, “A Little Less Conversation”, “Crazy Train”, and “Highway to Hell” mixed with some “Lovin’ You.” I was definitely tapping my shoes through a good portion of the movie. The 3D was ok but not as spectacular as How to Train Your Dragon. There were a few gimmicks to keep the kids going “awwww” but other than those, there was no point for the 3D glasses. It didn’t add to the experience at all in my opinion. The visual effects were pretty cool…Dreamworks Animation does a great job on their animation techniques. There is one sequence of scenes where Megamind has a mini laser and fire show which was a feast for the eyes. If you’re a fan of animation and over the age of 10, I’d recommend Megamind for a good laugh, otherwise…go buy How to Train Your Dragon on DVD.

REVIEW: The Other Guys

Monday, August 9th, 2010

The Other GuysWhen I first saw the trailer for this movie, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell together was something I had never imagined, so it struck me as very odd. With Adam McKay at the helm I was definitely hoping for the best, but with this summer not having given me anything to be excited about, I wasn’t sure if this could deliver. I came into this movie thinking it would probably be just another run of the mill comedy with a few jokes here and there. I was very mistaken. The Other Guys is a great film.

The movie kicks off right where the trailers leave you, with the NYPD parading two of their biggest performers, P.K. Highsmith [Samuel L. Jackson] and Christopher Danson [Dwayne Johnson] all over the media following a minor drug bust. Although they are notorious for the over use of their power to uphold the law, even in the instances of the smallest crimes, these two are spun to be the big heroes in the city. That is until the other guys, namely Allen Gamble [Will Ferrell] and Terry Hoitz [Mark Wahlberg], step up and try to take on a case of their own. It is here where the relationship between these two really begins to stand out.

The Other Guys

The Top Cops: P.K. Highsmith (Samuel L. Jackson) and Christopher Danson (Dwayne Johnson)

Ferrell plays a police detective that is complacent in crunching numbers in the background as the precinct’s financial accountant, while Wahlberg plays a bitter cop that has been reduced to office work by a mistake he made early in his career. One wants to keep his life simple and calm by avoiding field work, while the other is looking for his next big chance to explode back on the scene. The juxtaposition of these two cops’ characters is what really makes this film work. At times they will argue over the smallest things and with Ferrell’s typical wacky, off the wall comedy (think Anchorman) and Wahlberg’s dry humor, these two seem to have a great on screen chemistry. Be it from Wahlberg’s love for Ferrell’s spouse, Dr. Sheila Gamble [Eva Mendes] and inability to understand why she married him, to Ferrell’s inability to understand why Wahlberg incessantly wants to take unnecessary risks, there wasn’t a moment that passed when I wasn’t completely enjoying the antics of these two.
The Other Guys

Really, who is that!? Will Ferrell and his on-screen wife, Eva Mendes.

Along with these inter-group struggles, the two are also met with outside conflict from a competing duo of cops and from their precinct captain. The two fellow officers, whose intentions are to ridicule the two and ultimately seal the deal on their perpetual assignment to desk duty, always seem to have a one up on the pair yet somehow are always thwarted by some coincidence or unsuspected slapstick occurrence at the very last moment. Their captain, Captain Gene Mauch [Michael Keaton], manages to balance his time in the film, working a hilarious side job, raising a family, and keeping these two in check, using familiar pop culture references, whenever they get out of line. The cast comes together really well and gives a realistic, yet hilarious take on how their precinct manages to keep the city streets safe.

The pacing of the movie is remarkable, as it manages to time and balance it’s action and drama in with the comedy, usually just long enough to set up a really hilarious tension break. It is essentially a large parody of the over dramatic cop dramas of the early 90s. Slow motion gun fights, over the top explosions, good cop/bad cop scenarios and even narration by Ice-T, its all here. The music takes the cue as well, offsetting the heavy action driven scenes with milder sultry saxophone blues, similar to the ones used in the olden days. At times, nostalgia briefly sets in, taking me back to the days when shows like NY Undercover and Law & Order were all the rave, yet in a matter of minutes, the movie returns to it’s humor, reminding you that this isn’t your typical police fare.
The Other Guys

The Other Guys: Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell

All in all, I really enjoyed this movie. It really had me captivated from the beginning and it is a movie I’d recommend it to anybody who enjoys police dramas or a good comedy. This summer’s fare of movies has been lacking in the laugh department and finally, I think I’ve found a movie that can deliver the goods for a while to come. Definitely go check out The Other Guys. It’ll be worth your efforts.

REVIEW: The Virginity Hit

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

Will Ferrell and Adam McKay*This is the first review of the movie anywhere which was screened for the first time at Comic-Con on Friday, July 16th*

At the end of The Other Guys panel at Comic-Con, Will Ferrell and Adam McKay announced a secret film that they produced called The Virginity Hit. They showed a trailer of the film and I couldn’t tell if it was a funny joke or actually a real movie. Well, it’s real and I got to see an advance screening of it that very same night! The movie is both written and directed by Andrew Gurland and Huck Botko who Will Ferrell and Adam McKay praised as the most innovative film makers of today.

The Virginity Hit is about a group of four high school friends who make a tradition of smoking from a bong (taking a hit) after each of them loses their virginity (the title makes a lot more sense now, right?). This special bong will only be used for this very special rite of passage. Each of the boys gets the dirty deed done except for Matt…and this is where the movie begins, following the steps and missteps of Matt to lose his virginity. Think American Pie mixed with Sex Drive and Superbad. So Think: Totally Awesome.

The movie is definitely unique in the way it’s shot. The camera is in the hands of a guy who just can’t put down the camera and films every little scene of life. He’s Matt’s best friend and brother from another mother, Zach. Combine this with a bunch of high school kids’ cameras and cell phones and you have the point of view which this film is shot and shown in. It’s really cool how they use a lot of pop culture references like YouTube to explain why there’s always a camera following them around. It makes the film feel more authentic and supplies you with an all access pass into the character’s lives.

I have to say, this was one of the coolest set of high schoolers I’ve ever seen in a film. For being a few average or even below average virgins, they hooked up with some beautiful girls and constantly had the hot girls hanging around them! They were smoking pot, drinking booze, and having a great time hanging out with each other. These are the type of friends who would do just about anything for one another and I mean anything. If you’ve seen the extra friendly bromance scene from the movie She’s Out Of My League, you know what I’m talking about.

The script is hilarious. The characters are hilarious. The way it’s filmed is hilarious. The movie is just genuinely funny. Most of the humor comes from the everyday antics of the high school kids; the stuff between the key plot points and twists. From their crazy parties to awkward relationships and family problems, it all feels real and hits home in one way or another. With all unknown actors, you can really believe that this could’ve happened to some poor unfortunate kid even with all the outrageous scenes. The feeling you get when you hang out with friends and laugh at yourselves is the kind of feeling I got from this movie.

I’m surprised at how well this movie was kept a secret. I had never even heard of the film until Will Ferrell and Adam McKay presented it at Comic-Con. Doing a Google search only turned up stories about the Comic-Con presentation. Even more amazing is the fact that it’s being set to release in just two months and it looks like it’ll be distributed nationwide through Columbia Pictures (Sony). I’m sure the producers, Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, had a lot to do with that but wow, what a great opportunity for the little known film makers, Andrew Gurland and Huck Botko, and their cast of kids. The story is a nonstop comedic gem and keeps escalating to the next problematic situation for Matt which leads to the next crazy scenario until Matt has enough, just can’t take it anymore, and finally figures out a master plan for himself. But will he ever get that Virginity Hit? You’ll just have to check out this flick when it comes out September 10th…it’s definitely not one to miss.
